What is IS? An Insiders Guide!
By Jessica Rodriguez

When I was choosing my course... there were so many decisions to make... what university, what majors but mostly exactly what course to do! I knew I was good at business and computers but I didn't have the patience for programming (Computer Science)... plus I had too much personality to be stuck behind a desk all day!

So after pondering my choices, I came across Information Systems.
Most the universities offer the course however I chose The University of Melbourne due to access and reputation.

The University of Melbourne explains the course as follows:

"The three-year Bachelor of Information Systems stresses the importance of creativity, leadership and teamwork. Graduates will gain an understanding of how hardware, software and telecommunications technology combine to assist organisations in achieving their goals.

The degree is structured along two themes: the technologies of information systems and the application of information systems to business and non-business organisations.
Over the three years, students undertake a core of eighteen subjects leading to a year-long industrial project in the final year. Students also choose from a range of elective subjects which can include areas in information systems, computer science, economics and commerce, a language study, or any other area of interest.”

However, actually studying the degree I have found that the course is a fantastic overview of the whole I.S field.
There is some programming (not much!) a little bit of maths, lots of management and systems design but mostly the course is about people!
The course allows you to learn how people fit in to the whole scope of I.S and how important systems are when integrated into an organisation.

If you like people, management, are creative or just enjoy technology... I advise you to check this course out... who knows you just may find what you are looking for!

Career options include:
- Systems Analyst
- Software Developer
- User Interface Designer
- Information Systems Consultant
- Management Consultant
- Multimedia Consultant
- Database Administrator
- IS Project Leader
- Programmer
- IS Manager
- User Support Staff

The course also allows you to chose the option of majors (I.S, Management, Science, Computer Science etc.) as well as combined degree options ... Science, Commerce, Geomatics, and Law (Monash).

There are many options and courses available, you have to chose one that YOU want to study ... not your parents or your friends. Remember, this is your career and your life. However if you make a mistake, don't worry! Universities usually let you swap to a more suitable course, but you have to hold a pretty reasonable grade average (70+)

Good luck in choosing your course and your future studies!
