Law/Comm: Does That Mean I'll be a Tax Lawyer?

Why Law?
In high-school I was a straight maths/science kid who though 'humanities' subjects (with the exception of accounting) were 'beneath me.' However as I began to consider possible university courses law began to appeal to me more and more. I was horrified! It seemed to me to be the ultimate betrayal of science, something completely against logic. However as I thought about it more, i realised that although I love maths and science and I always will, ultimately I wanted to work with people's problems with society and each other. Once I came to this realisation law seemed like the obvious choice, however there were still more decisions!

Double degree?
The era of single law degrees is over. Whether, once you have decided on law, you choose to mix it with arts, engineering, medicine, science, or as I did, commerce, depends on your personal preferences. So why did I choose commerce? Sadly I have to admit I tossed a coin. Several times! And finally settled on commerce. I am so sorry that I can't offer you more advice than that.

It is helpful if you think about what you like and dislike, if you know that science and engineering involve prac lessons, that arts can involve a lot of essays, and that medicine takes forever. It is also helpful to know that, (at melbourne university anyway) it is quite simple to change your second degree within the first few weeks of enrolment. No one degree makes you more employable as a law graduate, nor is your perfomance in the second degree crucial to your future career in law (if that is what you choose!)If all else fails, do what i did and turn to random chance!

What Careers?
Anything in business. With an accounting major in the commerce degree as I am doing, you can become and accountant. There are also HR, economics, marketing and management majors available at Melbourne University. If you choose to work in business your law degree will be very valuable and wil also allow you to work in the traditional legal field as well as a mediator or dispute resolution officer.

Fun?
My course is so much fun! At Melbourne university first year law students are actively encouraged to get to know one another and to socialise together. As a result I have made HEAPS of friends in the law faculty really easily. This is a lot harder to do in the huge, quite impersonal commerce lectures, however the smaller tutorials do provide some opportunities for friendship. I am also a resident at St Mary's College which is on campus at Uni.

If you want to work with people, and have the drive to succeed, law is the place to be.
